Identification:
- Palmer - Male and female flowers are on different plants with a long unbranched terminal seed head.
- Smooth - Seedling is smooth and seed head has short spikes.
- Spiny - The stem has a pair of sharp stiff spines at most nodes.
Geographical Distribution:
- Palmer - Western half of the United States.
- Smooth and Spiny - Eastern half of the United
States. These tall annuals are strong competitors in cultivated areas
and can be found in waste areas as well.
